Modern Philatelic Rarities – What They Are and Why They Are So Valuable
Unique postage stamps are not only found in the distant past. Even today, under certain circumstances, fascinating and highly valuable issues can emerge. One of the best examples is the Vatican postage stamp issued on 16 May 2023 for the World Youth Day in Lisbon.
The 2023 Vatican Stamp Case – A Modern-Day Rarity
The stamp was released and sold on the day of its official issue, but already the next day it was withdrawn from circulation. The reason was its design, which according to public protests referenced Portugal’s colonial past. As a result, the Vatican postal administration decided to immediately withdraw the entire issue.
During the single day it remained valid, approximately 2,000 copies entered circulation. This made the stamp with a face value of €3.10 an instant rarity. Today, it sells at auctions for €750–€800.

The withdrawn stamp was later replaced by a new version with the same denomination but a completely different design.
